Class 2A Boys Notes – Fenwick has been lurking in the top 10 since the start of the season. The Friars’ top 10 finish in the high-powered Palatine Invitational catapults them into the top spot this week. #2 Morton easily dominated then #1 Mahomet-Seymour (now #8) at East Peoria. Fenwick and Morton will faceoff this Saturday at Detweiller Park. Belvidere North stays at #3 after finishing second at Rock River Run without their #1 runner Evan Horgan. Kaneland won at Rock River. They debut in the top 10 at #6 for this week. Lake Villa jumps into the top 30 at #18 after their race at Grant. Normal West at #25 and #29 East Peoria are new in the top 30 for this week.

Class 2A Boys – September 22, 2021

Class 2A Boys Notes – It is too close to call at the top of Class 2A. Mahomet-Seymour’s performance at the Richard Spring Invitational gives the team a less than 10 second lead ahead of Morton in this week’s rankings. Morton did not run their top 7 last week at Dunlap. Payton Prep ran good at Whitney Young last week and move up seven spots to #10. Four teams enter the top 30 with Urbana leading the way at #19. Springfield (#27), Marion (#28), and Mather (#29) also move into the top 30. The IHSA released their sectional assignments last Thursday. Seven schools from each of the four sectionals will qualify for the state meet. The Woodstock North Sectional appear to be the strongest (this week) with 10 ranked schools at their site. The Fenton Sectional is next with 8 ranked teams followed by Decatur MacArthur and Metamora who have 6 teams each. 

Class 2A Boys – September 15, 2021

Class 2A Boys Notes – All three Boys classes are interesting this fall. Another plot twist occurred after the First to the Finish Invitational. There are still so many questions to be answered with the top 12 teams in Class 2A. Mahomet-Seymour is a solid #1 with a convincing win at Springfield last Saturday. The Bulldogs placed 5 runners in the top 20 led by Kyle Nofziger and Joseph Scheele that could make some noise this week in Peoria. Mahomet-Seymour racing Detweiller may gave us a little indication with some of the 2A teams that ran there last week. Morton moves to #2 this week with the win at FTTF. The Potters had 3 runners in the first 15, but the top 5 split could be a concern. Belvidere North remains at #3 after finishing 2nd in Peoria led by basketball player turned runner Evan Horgan. Riverside-Brookfield moved to #4 after their race in Peoria. They have a good first four runners. The gap between 4 and 5 is something that needs to be addressed. Deerfield remains at #5 after a strong race in Peoria. Grayslake Central was without their #1 runner Bryan Vale in Peoria as they finished 9th. We accounted for Vale out of the lineup and stay within reach for the top 5 at #6. Fenwick moved to #7 after a 3rd place finish at Joliet behind 3A powers Oswego and York. There is a separation after the first 10 teams in this class. Any of those 10 teams could leave Peoria in November with a state trophy. There is plenty of time to fix splits, gaps, etc.  Payton Prep looked great last week in Peoria, and they are the highest team entering the rankings at #17. Five other teams are new in the top 30 this week including Highland at #24, then Washington, Niles Notre Dame, Mt. Zion, and Normal West at #26 through #29.

Class 2A Boys – September 7, 2021

2A Boys Notes – A wild opening weekend with seven schools moving into the top 30. Mahomet-Seymour had a great opening win in their meet at Charleston and move to the #1 spot. Grayslake Central had two strong races last week at Lake County and Fenton and just edged up to the #2 position. Belvidere North gave us an indication of how good they could be after winning the team competition at Detweiller at Dark at the end of July. Wins at Sycamore and Crystal Lake South were good enough to move them into the thrd spot. Morton did not have a great opening race at Normal West but rebounded last week with a win at Galesburg. They drop to #4 after holding the pre-season top spot. They are within reach of #1. Deerfield’s race in both the Varsity and Sophomore divisions at Hinsdale move them into the top ten at #5.

The biggest surprise for me was Glenbard South moving from unranked to #6. They finished 7th out of 16 teams last week at Sycamore. They had a nice split of 39 seconds through four runners but their fifth was almost three minutes back. Add in Jaden Frederick, who finished fourth in the Frosh/Soph race, would have been the team’s fourth runner in that race. Looking at the big picture, this team has the stuff to move into the top 10.

Crystal Lake Central and Woodstock have started out strong and are two more teams making it into the top 20.

8/23 2A Boys Notes  –  The IHSA on August 18 made changes to the 2021 XC Classifications. Riverside-Brookfield, HL Richards, and Marist were moved from Class 3A to Class 2A. Riverside-Brookfield is now ranked #8. All other schools have been moved down one spot because of the addition of Riverside-Brookfield. Lakes Community was dropped from the top 30 because of the change. Marist and HL Richards were not ranked because of the move into Class 2A.
