Johnson out as Homewood-Flossmoor Girls Track & Field Head CoachPublished by
By Michael Newman
Sources confirmed to ILXCTF.com on Friday that earlier in the week Zontavius Johnson was no longer the Head Girls Track & Field Coach at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in Flossmoor, Illinois.
An email was sent to the school on Friday morning. ILXCTF.com received a response from Homewood-Flossmoor Athletic Director Gail Smith Sunday afternoon.
In that e-mail, Smith replied: “Zontavius Johnson is no longer a coach at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.”
Smith or the school would not confirm or deny if Johnson resigned or if he was released from his position. No reason was given publically by the school or by Smith on why Johnson is no longer the coach at the south suburban school.
Johnson became the head coach at Homewood-Flossmoor in the 2016-2017 school year. He had coached eight years prior at North Lawndale College Prep in Chicago. In his time at Homewood-Flossmoor in that position, he led the Girls team to second place finishes in the IHSA 3A Girls State Track and Field Championships in 2017 and 2018. Homewood-Flossmoor won the Girls 3A State title in 2019.
On July 11, 2019, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named Zontavius Johnson as the Illinois Girls High School Track & Field Coach of the Year.
No announcement has been made of who will be the new head coach of the Girls Track & Field Program at Homewood-Flossmoor as of September 2.
