This Weekend in Illinois HS Cross Country Highlights - October 2, 2017

Yes, there were other meets that happened throughout the state this past weekend. They seem to be overshadowed by the run of Dylan Jacobs at the Peoria Invitational.

Here are highlights of some of the meets that took place across the state this past weekend.

 

Locktoberfest Invitational @ Dellwood Park

#2 Neuqua Valley tuned up for Wednesday’s Naperville Twilight Invitational with a convincing win in this Boys only meet. The Wildcats had 6 runners in the top 12 to score only 32 points. They were led by the individual win from Zach Kinne. The junior ran a fast 15:13.4 on the hilly Dellwood Park 5k course 18 seconds ahead of Whitney Young’s Clayton Mendez. Plainfield South’s Christian Knowlton led the next pack in as he finished third (15:55.3). Ryan Kennedy led the Neuqua Valley pack finishing fourth (15:58.2). Neuqua Valley had a 53 second split on their top five. Their split from Kennedy to fifth runner Chris Keeley was only eight second.

#9 Plainfield South, behind Knowlton’s third-place finish, was second (97 points) followed by Wheaton North (126 points) and Whitney Young (146 points).

 

St. Charles North Invitational @ Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve

#5 Hinsdale Central also used this race as a tune up for the Naperville Twilight Invitational. The Red Devilettes had 3 runners in the first 6 to win the Girls team title (68 points) ahead of #12 Lyons Township (80 points), 2A #2 Belvidere North (82 points), and #10 Batavia (100 points).

The surprise in this race was the run by Hinsdale Central’s McKenna Revord. The sophomore ran 17:29.8 for the win and was 12 seconds ahead of Madison Diercks of Belvidere North (17:41.5). Reilly Revord was the second runner in for Hinsdale Central placing third (17:46.7). Hinsdale Central ended up placing their top 5 within the first 32 places as their split on the group was 102 seconds.

A strong kick by Geneva’s Josh Rodgers gave him the win in the Boys race. Rodgers ran 15:11.4 for the win edging Wheaton-Warrenville South’s Sean Maison by one second (15:12.8). Maison’s teammate William Hauenstein finished third (15:17). It was the pack from #3 Wheaton-Warrenville South that gave them the team win with 32 points. The Tigers placed 4 runners in the first 9 as well as 6 runners in the top 15. Their split on the group was 46 seconds. #13 Batavia scored 82 points to finish second ahead of Waubonsie Valley (92 points).

 

Pat Savage Invitational @ Niles West HS

The story of this race was the strong race run by Evanston Township’s Enyaeva Michelin. The senior went under 17 minutes for the second time this season as she recorded a 16:41.3 time to win the race by more than a minute ahead of Round Lake’s Fatima Giron. She basically kept the same pace throughout going through the first mile near 5:30, passing two miles in 11:11, and then running the final mile in 5:30. Northside Prep used a 6-7 finish from Sara McCoy and Erin Franke to win the Girls team title with 80 points ahead of Taft (140 points) and St. Viator (161 points).

#17 St. Ignatius had a 3-4 finish from Michael Obroin and John Walls to win the Boys team title (60 points). The Wolfpack had a 46 second split on their top five. Evanston Township (103 points) and Loyola Academy (120 points) finished second and third. Jack McNabola of Francis Parker ran under 15 minutes for three miles for the third time this season. His time of 14:55 was ten seconds faster than second-place Conor Perreault of Niles North.

 

Elmwood-Brimfield Invitational

Eureka’s Emma Argo won the Girls Individual race in the top “1A” meet of the weekend. Argo covered the 3-mile course at Maple Lane Country Club in 18:16 finishing ten seconds ahead of second-place Veronica Hein of St. Teresa. It was Canton who was in charge in the team race. The 2A school, who has been ranked in 2A at times this season, ran a 59 second split on their top five to score 63 points finishing ahead of 1A #6 Eureka (75 points), 1A #12 St. Teresa (143 points), and 1A #20 Elmwood-Brimfield (150 points).

Jackson Stewart of St. Teresa was in control of the Boys race winning in 15:28. He was 19 seconds ahead of Elmwood’s Cooper Hoffmann and another seven seconds ahead of Tremont’s Leland Sumner. 1A #8 Deer Creek-Mackinaw used tight pack running to win the Boys team title 57-61 ahead of host #3 Elmwood-Brimfield. Dee-Mack was led by the eighth-place finish from Gary Cates and then a four-runner pack between 12th and 15th places. Their split on five was a miniscule 25 seconds.

 

Wheaton North Falcon Classic

Olivia Niziolek of Maine South pulled away from the field in the final mile to win the championship flight. Niziolek covered the 2.95-mile course at St. James Farm in 17:26 ten seconds ahead of Abby Flammersfield of Oswego East. #20 York and #11 Lockport both scored 33 points from the seven flights with York winning on the tie-break. The Dukes did not pick up a win in any of the flights but were led by the fourth-place finish from Sarah May in the championship flight.

 

Wheaton Academy Warrior Classic @ Kress Creek Farms

2A #3 Sycamore flexed their muscles in this meet winning the Boys team title placing 5 runners in the first 12. The Spartans scored 36 points ahead of 2A #17 Illiana Christian (90 points) and

2A #22 Hinsdale South (109 points). It was a great finish in the individual race as Sycamore’s Stephen Poorten ran 14:53 for the win three seconds ahead of Brett Haffner of Hinsdale South. Sycamore’s split on their top five was 86 seconds, but only 28 seconds from their second through fifth runners.

A 2-3 finish from Rhiannon O’Keefe and Lexi Affolter pushed St. Ignatius Prep to the win in the Girls race (56 points). Wheaton Academy (71 points) and Sycamore (109 points) finished second and third. Freshman Eden Rainbolt of Kankakee McNamara ran 18:32 to win the individual race 14 seconds ahead of O’Keefe.

 

Robinson Invitational (Thursday)

Less than one second separated the first three runners in what was an exciting finish in the Girls race. Tolono Unity’s Jordan Harmon and Evelyn Adkins finished together (18:25.91) with Benton’s Amelia McLain close behind (18:26.11). 1A Top ranked Tolono Unity placed 5 runners in the first 11 to win the Girls team championship with only 26 points. Charleston (84 points) and Mattoon (135 points) followed.

Led by the 1-3 finish from Nick Oakley and Austin Ames, Charleston won the Boys team title with 84 points ahead of 1A #10 Robinson (103 points), Richland County (122 points), and Lawrenceville (123 points). Oakley’s winning time of 15:12 was 28 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Negus Bogard of Hutsonville/Palestine.

 

Jacksonville Invitational

Wyatt McIntyre of Athens won the Boys Championship Flight running 14:25 on the 2.9-mile course. He won by 44 seconds ahead of Lincoln’s Blake Jones. 1A #2 Athens won five of the seven scored flights to easily win the team championship. Williamsville’s Grace Gudwien won the Girls Championship Flight (19:22) 16 seconds ahead of Chatham-Glenwood’s Taylor Shamhart.
