Early on May 1, Rochester All-State runner Josh Cable was involved in a house fire in his home in rural Rochester. According to the Springfield Journal Register, “Rochester Fire Chief John Archer said witnesses reported the teen had been in the basement of the house and became disoriented by the smoke. The teen’s father was able to get him out of the house. The teen suffered some burns and smoke inhalation. He was taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center. Archer declined to identify the teen. However, Memorial Medical Center spokeswoman Sue Friedman said Tuesday afternoon that Josh Cable was listed in serious condition.”

In an e-mail received from his Coach Bill Owens, Josh Cable’s mother Kelly sent out this message:

“Good morning- as most of you know, we had a house fire and the fire started in the basement, opposite side of the house where Josh was sleeping.  Long story short, we were all awake and moving out of the house, he chose a different door and got trapped.  He tried several options and finally made it out and he is in the Memorial Medical Center burn unit. Basically, an ICU for burn victims.

We're 24 hours into it and it's a process he's going thru, but we're in the right place.  They are good at this here!! Most of the time he's been heavily sedated and on a intubator, but we have been able to communicate with him a little.  He was able to write letters with his hand in the air to tell us his story late last night.

He is in good spirits!  He said he feels good and he's happy.  (Again, heavily medicated). But, he's very positive and thrilled to have gotten out and it comes thru, in his eyes and his few messages.

They've cleaned his lungs and are monitoring.  They are managing his burns and pain.  they're giving us bits of information as we go.  The doctors believe most of his burns are 2nd degree with spots of third.  Usually 2nd degree burns heal nicely. They're monitoring that also.  Plastics are coming again today around noon.

He's young, healthy and determined, the 3 best traits to have in this type of situation.

Thank you for the messages, love and support.  Feel free to share this and I'll try to find a way to update people as we get thru this.

The doctors will be concerned with infection, so visiting won't be probable.  But, we're going to find a way for him to receive messages and communicate.  He has been loving the messages I've been able to deliver so far.”

Cable, a senior, has qualified for the IHSA State Track & Field Meet in all three years of competing in Track & Field for the school in the 800 Meter Run. He earned all-state honors in the event finishing fifth as a freshman in 2015, seventh as a sophomore in 2016, and third as a junior in 2017.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Josh and his family for good health and a speedy recovery.

UPDATE FROM KELLEY CABLE (JOSH'S MOM) 5/3/2018

Good morning!  We're 48 hours in and It's starting to feel like we're establishing a bit of a routine now. He has several teams of doctors coming around each day working with him--Respiratory, Trauma, Plastics, and the nursing staff here.  We can't stress enough how amazing they are. His night nurse last night and the night before is from Rochester and we just love him!!

Medically speaking, it seems we're past the crucial/critical part.  Things are going as expected.  He still has to be on the intubator for precautionary measures. (Which means he can't talk to us).  His eyes are swollen now so he can't see (Temporary).   They've been weaning him off the vent a little here and there to see how he tolerates it (and that's been going great). The plastics team came by already today.  They're watching some spots on his neck and left calf.  No plan for skin grafts at this point but will re-evaluate daily.

Generally speaking, we've been able to communicate with him best in the late evening.  His personality and strength shines thru.  Amazing how well people can communicate with body language.  He's so cooperative and strong.  Just being able to hang out with him, and seeing his strength and bits of his personality, brings such a sense of relief and peace.

Last night he was able to listen to the news report with us and he listened  to messages that 1450 sent and he said he recognized the everyone's voices.  I've relayed some e-card messages to him and I'm hoping to get to read them all to him today or this evening. YOU ALL ARE JUST THE BEST!  ❤❤❤

On a fun note, I could tell he loved to hear that the baseball team got a big W last night.  (When he likes my topics of conversation, he gives me big nods. 😊)

The support and people offering to help have been incredible.  Right now, just please keep the prayers  and positive messages coming.  That's really all we need right now.  You're all really helping us more than you know.  We feel the love. ❤

Update from Day 3 -- short version, 2 steps forward one step back. But reassured that we're back on track.

So happy to be reporting in days and not hours!!!

Medically, he was doing so well, so fast, that they moved on to giving him nutrients and it seems that he wasn't ready for food yet.  So.... yesterday wasn't our best day, but the doctors took a step back, re-evaluated and are going to introduce the changes slower.  As part of the stepping back, they've also lessened the sedation, so we're now able to communicate more often, which means I get to hang out and decipher his writing, which I absolutely ❤️ to do!). Probably the biggest positive of the day for him is that the swelling in his eyes has improved so he can see, which has to be a huge relief!

I was able to read the track team cards to him last night!!!  That was fun!  And thanks guys, now i've been humming the "crowd favorite rap" in my head ever since I read the notes!  😉😆

On a personal note, Aaron's on his way home today so we're all anxious to see him!!  (His girlfriend, Abby, is taking care of our cat, btw, so that's taken care of 😊)

Al and I are holding up great, honestly, thx to you.  Sending ❤️ and hugs back to you all!
