Where to start after this weekend?

There were so many great performances in what was the final indoor weekend for some teams. The rest of the teams will head to Bloomington for next weekend’s Illinois Top Times.

We could not mention every meet in this highlight article.

You can read or watch from the following meets that we were at:

DVC Girls

WSC-Silver Boys

Mid Suburban League

Texas Distance Festival

You can also read about meets earlier in the week here.

Nagel-Saylor (MSL Indoor) Invitational @ North Central College

This co-ed meet on Saturday produced some great performances. Madison Marasco of Schaumburg may have produced the race of the day in great times just kept coming. The Schaumburg senior was the big favorite in the Girls 800 Meter Run. She had company early with Barrington freshman Molly FitzPatrick right on her side as they passed 400-meters in 65 seconds. Marasco pulled away in the next 200 going past 600 meters in 1:39. Her coach yelled something at Marasco and she took off. Her face was that of surprise as she crossed the line in a state leading 2:11.74.

“I felt pretty good my first 400. I felt comfortable,” Marasco stated. “My coach yelled at me, if you want that record, you need to keep going. I’m proud to have done that for my team.”

Marasco broke a six-year old meet record set by Palatine’s Tess Wasowicz (2:15.46). Marasco had a great day running a 2:13.9 anchor split for her team’s win in the 3200 Meter Relay (9:28.89, IL #4) ahead of Hoffman Estates (9:29.99, IL #5). Marasco also ran a 59.6 split on her second leg as their team finished second (4:07.34) behind Hoffman Estates’ 4:06.41 (IL #7) winning time.

Declan Rustay of Hoffman Estates started out slowly at the York Invitational two weeks ago. He found his groove in this meet winning three individual events. Rustay was by himself as he crossed the line in 6.49 (IL #3) to win the 55 Meter Dash. What could have been the race of the day was in the 400 Meter Dash. Rustay won a close finish with Barrington’s Luis Cossio and Fremd’s Jaden Jackson.

“I knew I had to beat them (Cossio and Jackson) after the cut if I wanted to win that race,” Rustay said. “Everything worked out in that race.” Rustay got the lead at 200-meters in that race and then held off charges by Cossio and Jackson in the final straight away. Only 15 hundredths of a second separated the three with Rustay getting the win (50.54, IL #6) with Cossio and Jackson finishing second and third both running 50.69 (IL #8). The two runners were only separated by to thousandths of a second.

Rustay ended his day with getting the meet record in the 200 Meter Dash. “I was in that race in 2015 when Shandall Thomas ran 22.37 to set that record,” Rustay added. “I kept thinking after that race that I was going to get that record.”

He did just that. After he crossed the line in winning the race, he looked up to the scoreboard as saw his time (22.31, IL #5). Then, he celebrated.

Nya Carr of Buffalo Grove had a great day winning the two sprint events. She set a new meet record in winning the 55 Meter Dash as her time of 7.08 is the best in the state at that distance. Carr came back to run 25.71 (IL #10) to win the 200 Meter Dash.

Barrington’s Jocelyn Long was also a double winner as she ran 10:58.10 (IL #8) to win the 3200 Meter Run ahead of Palatine’s Anne Marie Jordan (11:17.84). Long came back to run 5:12.10 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Palatine’s Kate Lechowicz (5:14.84).

Wheeling’s Lawrence Knish was a double winner in the Boys meet. He cleared 6-5 to win the High Jump. He came back to jump 22-2 to also win the Long Jump.

SWSC-Boys Championships @ Olivet Nazarene University

We will continue to ask how far John Meyer of Lockport will go this spring in the Shot Put ring. Simply put, I am guessing that he will continue to exceed expectations.

Meyer’s performance and series of throws Friday night were history making. He became the first Illinois high school athlete to go beyond 70-feet as he unleashed a 70-4.25 put in the second round. His series of throws were incredible.

Meyer series – 69-5, 70-4.25**, Foul, 67-11, 69-5, 69-5.

Heading into this season, there had never been an Illinois athlete that had gone in the five fair throws that Meyer accomplished in this meet.

Homewood-Flossmoor is considered one of the top teams in 3A this spring. They showed that in this meet winning the conference championship with 128 points. Lockport, another team to watch outdoors, finished second with 86 points. The Vikings ended the meet with five individual wins and two relays titles. That was accomplished without star sprinter Joshua Bridges who did not compete in any individual events.

EJ Burruss started the Homewood-Flossmoor winning ways by jumping 22-6.5 to win the Long Jump. Cole Lewis cleared 6-4 to win the High Jump. On the track, Grant Floyd ran 7.04 to win the 60 Meter Dash. Stewart Keene ran an indoor personal best of 1:58.60 to win the 800 Meter Run. Matthew Lewis-Banks also took the personal best route in winning the 60 Meter Hurdles (8.28, IL #7). Their relays were also hot. The Vikings ran the state’s fastest time (1:30.25) in winning the 800 Meter Relay ahead of Lockport (1:32.58, IL #6). The Vikings were also on top in the 1600 Meter Relay as they ran 3:27.91 (IL #7) ahead of Thornridge by five seconds.

Connor McCarthy of Lockport is an athlete to watch as we head outdoors. McCarthy was a double winner jumping an indoor personal best of 45-0 to win the Triple Jump. He also ran 22.68 to win the 200 Meter Dash. McCarthy also finished third in the Long Jump.

SWSC-Girls Championships @ Olivet Nazarene University

The Girls meet took over the Olivet Nazarene facility Saturday afternoon. The result was the same as Homewood-Flossmoor won the Girls conference championship with 144 points ahead of Bolingbrook (97 points). Their success came from finishing 1-2 in the three sprints led by a double win from Olivia Oliver. The senior ran 7.82 to win the 60 Meter Dash edging teammate Jacqueline Bassey by one hundredths of a second. Oliver also ran 25.36 to win the 200 Meter Dash with teammate Treylyn Newkirk placing second. Oliver was also a part of Homewood-Flossmoor’s winning 800 Meter Relay quartet as they ran the state’s fastest time of 1:41.91 that was more than six seconds ahead of second-place Bolingbrook. The Lady Vikings also ran 4:04.20 (IL #2) to win the 1600 Meter Relay ahead of Lincoln-Way East (4:07.87).

Mackenzie Brownrigg was the meet’s other double winner as she ran 2:22.52 to win the 800 Meter Run and 5:17.41 to win the 1600 Meter Run.

DVC Boys Championships @ North Central College

The nine-team of this configuration of this conference will be no more at the end of the season as four schools will leave to start a new conference. In the final nine-team meet, Neuqua Valley again captured the team title with 136.5 points. Wheaton-Warrenville South placed second with 112 points. The Wildcats won this meet without winning an event. It was a testament of their strength and depth.

Wheaton-Warrenville’s Cedric Rowzee won two events. He ran 6.53 to win the 55 Meter Dash just three hundredths of a second ahead of Neuqua Valley’s Myles Gascon (6.56, IL #6). Rowzee came back to run 22.63 (IL #9) to win the 200 Meter Dash ahead of Neuqua Valley’s Gascon (23.25) and Donovan Turner (23.27). Rowzee was also a part of the winning 800 Meter Relay as the Tigers ran 1:32.91 (IL #9) finishing ahead of Neuqua Valley (1:33.10).

Lake Park’s Dan Spejcher also won two events. The senior ran the state’s fastest time (7.64) in winning the 55 Hurdles ahead of Neuqua Valley’s Turner (7.73). Spejcher also jumped 22-2 to win the Long Jump.

Two of the top three times in the state occurred in the 800 Meter Run with Joey Simon of Wheaton North running 1:56.22 (IL #2) finishing ahead of Neuqua Valley’s Dakota Getty (1:56.84, IL #3) and Waubonsie Valley’s Wes York (1:58.56). It was a close finish in the 1600 Meter Run as only half a second separated the first four finishers. Metea Valley’s Rokas Gudinavicius captured the win in the race (4:23.69) just one hundredths of a second ahead of Scott Maison of Wheaton-Warrenville South (4:23.70). Neuqua Valley’s Michael Madiol (4:23.80) and Tyler Bombacino (4:24.12) finished third and fourth. South’s Sean Maison ran a personal best of 9:24.61 (IL #6) to win the 3200 Meter Run three seconds ahead of Neuqua Valley’s Ryan Kennedy (9:27.66).

Upstate Eight Conference Championships @ Batavia (Friday/Saturday)

This meet featured the Boys on Friday and the Girls on Saturday. It had only been three days since Camron Donatlan had been playing on West Aurora’s basketball team that had lost in the 4A Supersectionals. His first competition on Friday was quite impressive to say the least. The two-time defending 3A champion in the High Jump started on a “high” note clearing a state best 6-10 to win the event. He also jumped 22-5 to win the Long Jump.

Batavia was in control in winning the team title with 172 points ahead of the 91 points scored by West Aurora. Sam Conger led the way by winning the 55 Meter Hurdles (7.66) with the state’s second-best time at that distance. Conger was also part of Batavia’s 800 Meter Relay that ran 1:32.79 (IL #7) to win by three seconds ahead of St. Charles North.

Batavia also swept the short sprints. Decorea McAlister ran 6.67 to win the 55 Meter Dash just a hundredth of a second ahead of Bartlett’s Sulaiman Ahmed (6.68). The Bulldogs took the top two spots in the 200 Meter Dash with Julian Davis winning (23.04) ahead of teammate Jeremiah Evers (23.18).

It was all Dajour Miles in the Girls meet on Saturday. The junior won three events in helping West Aurora win the conference title (124.5 points) ahead of Batavia (114.5 points) and Glenbard East (89 points). Miles was pushed by Batavia’s Tori Ortiz in all three wins. It was Miles that ran the state’s second-fastest time in winning the 55 Meter Dash (7.15) ahead of the 7.24 time run by Ortiz. The margin was wider in the 400 Meter Dash as Miles ran 58.22 to finish more than a second ahead of Ortiz (59.49). Her third individual win came in the 200 Meter Dash running under 25-seconds (24.88) and again finishing ahead of Ortiz (25.72). Miles also ran on West Aurora’s 1600 Meter Relay quartet that ran 4:12.05 to finish ahead of St. Charles East (4:16.07).

St. Charles North’s Audrey Ernst missed most of the cross-country season due to injury. In her first competition of the track season, the senior proved that she is ready to compete against the state’s best. Ernst started by running 2:18.45 to win the 800 Meter Run less than a second ahead of Glenbard East freshman Lauren Huber (2:19.01). Ernst was by herself in the 1600 Meter Run as she put up a fast 5:04.69 (IL #6) to win by 16 seconds ahead of Batavia’s Marygrace Golden (5:20.27).

WSC-Silver Girls Championships @ Proviso West

All Lyons Township needed to do in the final event of the night was finish ahead of Hinsdale Central and the 1600 Meter Relay or not get disqualified. The Lions succeeded in both of those as they finished second (4:06.41) behind Proviso West (4:05.80) in the event with Hinsdale Central finishing fourth (4:07.16). That gave Lyons Township the conference title (92 points) ahead of Hinsdale Central (87.33) and Downers Grove North (83 points).

Distance races were in the spotlight in this meet. Hinsdale Central opened it up by running the fastest time in the state (9:24.96) in winning the 3200 Meter Relay. Katelynne Hart of Glenbard West came off her win last week at the New Balance Indoor Nationals by running 2:13.64 (IL #2) to win the 800 Meter Run ahead of Hinsdale Central’s Grace McCabe (2:17.27). The 1600 Meter Run had the top five runners within six seconds of each other. Reilly Revord of Hinsdale Central took home the win (5:05.93) ahead of York’s Sarah May (5:07.98). Glenbard West took the top two places in the 3200 Meter Run as Lindsey Payne ran (10:55.20) to finish ahead of teammate Katie Hohe (10:58.14).

Downers Grove North had two athletes that had double wins. Kimberly Brent won the 300 Meter Dash (41.69) and the 200 Meter Dash (26.38). Isabel Maletich won both horizonal jump events as she won the Long Jump (18-3) and the Triple Jump (37-5).

WSC-Gold Girls Championships @ Morton West

It was closer than some expected, but Downers Grove South still was command in winning the team championship with host Morton Township in second (128 points).

What did help Downers Grove South was 1-2 finishes in two of the distance events. Erin Riedy ran 2:21.73 to win the 800 Meter Run ten seconds ahead of teammate Alisha Macas. Olivia Duax won the 3200 Meter Run (11:54.66) ahead of teammate Allison Calek. Another sweep was prevented in the 1600 Meter Run as Willowbrook’s Victoria Palma ran 5:16.13 finishing ahead of Downers Grove South’s Brenna Cohoon (5:16.64) and Becky Versaskas (5:19.64).

Shelton distanced herself in the 1600 Meter Run as she ran 5:12.84 for the win ahead of Christensen (5:16.90).

Huntley Last Chance Meet

This meet is becoming more of a must see meet. It is also a chance for teams to take advantage of Huntley’s fast surface. Crete-Monee’s Jamal Safo made sure that he did with some big-time performances. He jumped 23-7.5 (IL #3) to win the Long Jump. Safo on the track was swift as he ran 7.06 to win the 60 Meter Dash. He currently has the second fastest time in the state in the 55 Meter Dash (6.48). Safo was also part of a fast 800 Meter Relay for Crete-Monee. Gene Armer Invitational @ University of Illinois Armory

This co-ed meet produced some state leaderboard performances.

In the Boys side of the meet, the closest race of the day occurred in the 60 Meter Dash as sophomores Christian Phillips of Urbana and Kaden Turner of Bloom Township both crossed the line together in the finals. After reviewing the photo, Phillips had the edge and the win. Both were timed at 7.07.

Pittsfield’s Eli Ten Eyck stepped down a distance tuning up for next week’s Top Times Meet running in the 800 Meter Run. It was close as he won by seven hundredths of a second running 2:00.75. Bloom Township’s Amitai Wheat (2:00.81) and Athens’ Wyatt McIntyre (2:01.82). Granite City’s Andrew O’Keefe ran 4:22.94 to win the 1600 Meter Run. McIntyre completed a good double finishing second (4:23.79) with Francis Parker’s Jack McNabola running 4:27.96 to finish third. Wilson ran a state leading 7.56 to win the 60 Meter Dash and then came back to win the 200 Meter Dash (24.58, IL #2). Granite City’s Toni Rush finished second in both events.

It was almost three wins for the Danville junior. However, Bloom Township’s Hannah Morris kind of got in the way. Morris, who earned All-American honors as a sophomore as well as winning the 3A state meet in this event, looks to be ready to roar in this event. She jumped 19-10 (IL #3) to win the event with Wilson jumping 18-9 to finish second.
