There could be two near-certainties in this race Saturday morning in Portland. The first is Fayetteville-Manlius winning its 11th national title in 12 years. The second could be Katelyn Tuohy of North Rockland NY winning the individual race.

Races are not run off statistics or on paper. The probability of both winning could be expressed as a 99.99 percent chance.

Manlius returns most of last year’s team that won convincingly. It could be the same story again as this team could easily win again. This team does it year after year.

It could be the battle for the other two spots on the podium that is even more exciting.

Great Oak CA was not expected to be in a top-five position for this meet after losing most of last year’s team to graduation. The Wolfpack reloaded and have been impressive in the moment that matters the most.

Naperville North IL, Wayzata MN, and Bozeman MT all have the talent to challenge Great Oak for a finish in the top three.Keller TX, Buchanan CA, and Mountain Vista CO are also worth keeping an eye on.

Individuals

It would have been great to see Claudia Lane and Katelyn Tuohy run against each other in this race. Without Lane, all eyes are on Tuohy. The sophomore from North Rockland NY finished 13th overall in this race a year ago. This year could be a different story as she has been in dominant in every race so far . She ran a Bowdoin Park course record of 16:52.4 to win the New York Federations Championships. Her closest competition in that race was Kelsey Chmiel of Saratoga Springs NY who was within 40 seconds. Chmiel ran sick in the New York Regionals last week finishing 12th overall.

The individual field behind these two runners is strong. Haley Herberg of Capistrano Valley CA is coming off an individual win in the California D2 race last week with her time 30 seconds behind the time that Lane ran in winning the D4 title.

Camila Noe of Bozeman MT could be one of seven team runners in the top 22 in this race. The senior, who finished 35th in last year’s NXN race, has run strong throughout the year including the NXR Northwest title.

Sophomores London Culbreath of McKinley North TX and Katelynne Hart of Glenbard West IL are two up and coming runners that could hang with Tuohy longer than just about anyone else. Culbreath finished 12th last year and has gone undefeated this season including a win in the Texas 5A State Meet. Hart finished 18th last year and is coming off a strong season including winning her second straight Illinois 3A title as well as repeating as the Midwest Regional Champion. The second-place finish last week at the Foot Locker Midwest Regional is evidence that she is ready for this opportunity on Saturday.

Lexy Halladay of Mountain View ID is another sophomore to keep an eye on. She finished 16th in this race last year and went undefeated during the regular season this fall before finishing second to Noe at the Northwest Regional. Emily Covert of Washburn MN finished just behind Hart in last Saturday’s Foot Locker race will be a factor up front along with fellow Minnesota runner Tierney Wolfgram of Math & Science Academy who ran 16:48 to win the Heartland Regional race.

Here is a look at each of the 22 teams that will compete in Saturday’s race.

Fayetteville Manlius NY

1 - 23 18:17 18:20   -3 18:24   -7 18:30   -13 19:11   -54

Notes – The Hornets are a good bet to win their 11th national title in the last 12 years. Only a second-place finish in 2013 is in the middle of the streak prevents a decade-long sweep. Manlius easily won both the New York Class A Championship, the New York Regional title as well as the Manhattan HS invitational in the middle of October.

Meet Projection – It seems highly unlikely that another team will get close to this one. Races are not won on paper though. The Hornets are tough up front with Claire Waters and Sophie Ryan possible top 20 finishers as well as having their first four runners in the top 11 team places. Even with their fifth runner finishing 50 or better, Manlius could be a lock.

1 - 71 17:32 17:35   -3 17:55   -23 18:23   -51 18:58   -86

Notes – Looking for another top-three finish in this meet after winning a sixth straight California D1 Championship last Saturday. Great Oak finished second by two points behind Naperville North at the Roy Griak Invitational in September. The Wolfpack also picked up wins at the Clovis Invitational and the Mt. SAC Invitational.

Meet Projection – There is no such term as “rebuild” in the Great Oak vocabulary. This team reloaded with the transfer in of Tori Gaitan and the improvement of Fatima Cortes. Both could be in the top ten team places. Cortes could finish in the top 15 overall. The Wolfpack has the edge for the second spot if they can get their third and fourth runners in the top 40 team places. Keeping their fifth runner 70th or better with a team spread on five of under 80 seconds solidifies that second spot.

1 - 76 17:13 18:25   -72 18:34   -81 18:39   -86 18:58   -105

Notes – A team to keep an eye on up front after winning a loaded Northwest regional as well as repeating as the Montana AA State Champions. Bozeman also finished second behind Claremont CA by three points at the Bob Firman Invitational in September.

Meet Projection – The Hawks remember last year when their boys team was a surprise in winning the national title. It could be the girls team to bring back a trophy. Bozeman should be a top five team. Camilla Noe finished 35th in this race last year. She could be among the top five overall in 2017. The key to watch on this team is the pack behind Noe. The spread on the second through fifth runners led by Alex Moore in the regional race was 32 seconds with Moore trailing Noe by 72 seconds.

1 - 65 17:15 17:17   -2 17:56   -41 18:02   -47 18:21   -66

Notes – The Trojans could be the hottest team in the girls field after winning the Minnesota AA state meet and then an impressive performance in winning the Heartland Regional title. This comes after they finished third in September behind Naperville North and Great Oak at the Roy Griak Invitational.

Meet Projection – Another team in the hunt to finish in the top three on Saturday. Sophomores Emma Atkinson and Caroline Sasson are possibilities of finishing in the first 15 team spots. The team had a 66-second spread on their top five in the regional race. That is a good thing considering the power in the front. There was a 39-second gap between Sasson and the top five in that race. Getting that gap down to 30 seconds with an overall spread of 53 seconds on five could mean a top-three finish.

Notes – Naperville North repeated as the Illinois 3A State Champion as well as repeating a trip to Portland by winning the Midwest Regional. The Huskies also traveled out of state to win both the Pleasant Valley Invitational ahead of Edina MN and the Roy Griak Invitational ahead of Great Oak CA and Wayzata MN. They also won the Naperville Twilight Invitational in October against the top six teams at the time in Illinois.

Meet Projection – Could this be the year that this Illinois team finishes in the top three? The formula is there to achieve that. Sarah Schmitt has qualified for both national meets and could be a factor in the top 20 in this race. The Huskies could also have Alex Morris and Hannah Ricci finish in the top 30 team places. North ran a season best 66-second spread on their top five in the regional race. The gap between the third and fourth runner in that race was 40 seconds. If they can drop that gap down by 10 seconds with an overall spread of 55 seconds, chances will be good for a top three finish for this squad.

2 - 82 18:20 18:33   -13 18:43   -23 19:32   -72 19:40   -80

Notes – The Texas 6A champion had a setback in the South Regional finishing second overall with another trip back to NXN. The Indians finished 15th last year. Keller also picked up a win at the Marcus I Invitational at the beginning of September and then winning the Chile Pepper Invitational.

Meet Projection – It was not the best race for Keller at regionals. Watch for a bounce back on Saturday with a possibility of finishing in the top five. The team was highly ranked most of the season. Top three runners Julia Black, Isabel Black, and Abbey Santoro were separated by only 23 seconds in their last two races. Having two of the runners in the top 20 team places would be big. Cambia Clark was 72 seconds behind the No. 1 runner at regionals, 62 at state. Keeping her within 60 seconds of the front is something to watch in this race.

Notes – It is a repeat visit to NXN for the Golden Eagles after winning the Colorado 5A state title and finishing second in the regional race behind Battle Mountain CO. Vista was undefeated during the regular season, including wins at the Liberty Bell Invitational and the Pat Patten Invitational.

Meet Projection – Vista could get close to the top five teams if Jenna Fitzsimmons can finish in the top 15 team places as well as Caroline Eck and Sarah O’Sullivan finishing in the top 30 team spots. What could hurt this team is its top-five spread. It was 93 seconds at the state meet. It jumped up to 114 seconds in the regional race.

Notes – Buchanan earned an auto qualifying bid to NXN by finishing second to Great Oak in the California D1 State Meet. It defeated Great Oak at the beginning of the season at the Woodbridge Invitational. The Bears finished third behind Great Oak and Claremont at the Clovis Invitational.

Meet Projection – This is a top 10 team and if things go right, Buchanan could get near the top five. Corie Smith and Meagan Lowe took the top two places in the California D1 state meet last week. Both athletes could finish among the top 20 overall in this meet. What could hurt this team is the overall spread on runners 3-5. It was 114 seconds on five at state. It was 99 seconds the meet before in their section finals. The Bears getting their pack to within 60 seconds of Smith and Lowe closer to the top five in the team standings.

2 - 120 18:14 18:14 18:31   -17 18:41   -27 19:49   -95

Notes – Jesuit qualified for NXN by finishing second in the Northwest Regional after winning the Oregon 6A title. The Crusaders also won the Nike Twilight Invitational in September ahead of Issaquah WA.

Meet Projection – Jesuit did not run its best at the regional race. There should be an upgrade on Saturday in the Crusanders' “backyard” at Glendoveer Golf Course. The big mystery was the performance of Makenna Schumacher. After winning the Oregon 6A individual state title, the junior was the team’s fourth runner in regionals finishing 37th. She has the potential to finish among the top 22 on Saturday. The team has run a 100-second and 95-second spread on its top five in the past two meets. Those type of numbers could hurt the chances of moving into the top five. If the spread goes higher, the team could slip out of the top 10.

Notes – The Lady Foxes make their first appearance at NXN after finishing second at the Midwest Regional. Yorkville has finished second behind Naperville North at the Peoria First to the Finish Invitational, the Naperville Twilight Invitational, and the Illinois 3A State Meet. Yorkville did not have its best race when it finished seventh at the Roy Griak Invitational.

Meet Projection – Yorkville is a solid top 10 team entering this meet. Alyssa Edwards, Emily Eberhart, and Helena Kleronomos have run close together during the end of the season. Edwards could finish in the top 25 team places with her teammates close behind. It will hurt that they will not have top five runner Olivia Borowiak in their lineup. Freshmen Sara Klemm and Hailey Simmons have stepped up. The team’s top five spread without Borowiak was 46 seconds in the regional race. Keeping the top three within 12 seconds of each other and the four-five runners staying within 20 seconds of the front pack could move this team up in the standings.

Notes – A team that could be a surprise in the top 10. The Hornets have come on strong down the stretch finishing second in the Minnesota AA State Meet and second in the Heartland Regional. Earlier in the season, Edina finished second to Naperville North at the Pleasant Valley Invitational and eighth at the Roy Griak Invitational.

Meet Projection – The key for the success of Edina is getting healthy at the right time with the return of Maria Rickman. She was the team’s third runner in the regional meet after missing most of the season due to injury. Kitty Berube has been the surprise for the Hornets as she has dropped her personal best for 5k by a remarkable nine minutes. Both Rickman and Berube will be big factors in Saturday’s race leading their pack. Emily Kompelien has been the team’s top runner all season and could finish among the top 10 team runners in this race. Sadie Schreiner has been a consistent second runner for the team most of the season. The sophomore did not run in their regional race. Schreiner in the lineup makes the Hornets stronger. Their top five spread needs to stay under 60 seconds for this team to be among the top seven teams.

Notes – Battle Mountain has finished strong down the stretch winning both the Colorado 4A state meet and the Southwest Regional. Earlier in the season, it finished second behind Mountain Vista in the Pat Patten Invitational.

Meet Projection – Could finish as high as fifth or slip into the 10 to 15 range in this meet. Elizabeth Constein has stepped up in the final two meets as the team’s top runner. She could be among the top 20 team runners in this race. The Huskies had their best race of the year in their regional run as they had a 45 second spread on their top five. It was 91 seconds at state. Keeping that spread under 50 seconds would be a plus. Keeping the top three runners within 15 seconds of Constein could move this team into the top 10.

Notes – The Wolfpack make an appearance at NXN by finishing third in the California state meet merge while winning the D2 State Championship. Claremont has been strong throughout the season winning the Bob Firman Invitational and finishing second at the Clovis Invitational and the Mt. SAC Invitational.

Meet Projection – Claremont ran their best top five-runner spread (36 seconds) in winning the D2 State title last Saturday. The Wolfpack will need a similar race like that this weekend. Sydney Hwang and Tess Rounds led the team finishing within six seconds of each other last week. A similar run like that could get them top 30 team individual places. Getting all five scorers in the top 60 team places could move this team into the top 10.

Notes – After finishing seventh in last year’s race, Broomfield makes a return trip to NXN with an at-large bid. The Eagles finished third in the Southeast Regional after finishing second behind Mountain Vista in the Colorado 5A State Meet. Broomfield scored 65 points with Battle Mountain in the Patten Invitational finishing third behind race winner Mountain Vista.

Meet Projection – On a good day, Broomfield could be among the top five. The way this team ran toward the end of the year, the possibility of getting near the top 10 is more realistic. Madison Mooney came on strong in the regional meet as the team’s top runner. If she repeats that effort, Mooney could be among the top 30 team finishers with teammate Ivy Gonzales. Their scoring spread was at 53 seconds in the regional race. It was as high as 69 seconds in the Pat Patten Invitational. The more runners closer to Mooney the better on Saturday. A top five spread of near 42 seconds pushes this team toward 10th or better.

Notes – The Dragons return to NXN after winning the South Regional for the second year in a row. Carroll finished third behind Keller and Hebron in the Texas 6A state meet.

Meet Projection – Carroll bounced back to win its regional race even though their spread of 45 seconds was bigger than the 21-second spread that they had in the state meet. Cate Tracht has been the team’s runner for most of the season. She was the #3 runner at state behind Sofia Santamaria and Sarah McBride. It is possible that all three runners could be near or under 40th in team numbers. A spread near 45 seconds could place them near 15th place.

Notes – The Warriors ran their best race of the season finishing second in the New York Regional qualifying for NXN. Liverpool did not run in the New York Federation Championships and did not qualify for the state meet. They finished second behind Fayetteville-Manlius in the Section 3 Championships. Only one team qualifies to state in the state’s section complex. Liverpool finished second behind Fayetteville-Manlius at Manhattan as the Wayne Pre-State Invitational.

Meet Projection – After not racing in almost a month, Liverpool qualified for the Portland trip running like it had run all season. The spread on the top five was 98 seconds in that race. It has been four to five seconds bigger during most of the year. Jenna Schulz and Madison Neuner had been the top two runners in 2017. Expect Schulz and Neuner to finish among the top 25 team places. Their gap on the top five could prohibit the team from getting into the top 15. A tighter pack race with their two runners in the top 25 gets Liverpool near the top 10.

Notes – Blacksburg makes it to NXN for the fifth straight year. The Bruins qualified for this year’s meet earning an at-large bid by finishing third in the Southeast Regional. Blacksburg won the Virginia 4A State Meet as well as winning the Great American XC Festival in October.

Meet Projection – The Bruins did not run their best race last week finishing third at regionals. Look for a rebound in Portland. Kaitlynn Wolfe has been the team’s top runner all season and could be among the top 15 team runners in this race. Ailene Edwards was 54 seconds behind Wolfe last week and 35 second behind in their state race. A gap of 30 seconds between the two would be a good thing on Saturday. The top five spread was up 25 seconds at 116 seconds last week. A spread under 85 seconds could get this team up in the standings.

Notes – After a slow start, the Crusaders came on strong winning the North Carolina 4A State Meet and then winning the Southeast Regional qualifying for NXN. Cardinal Gibbons finished fifth at the Trinity/Valkyre Invitational. They finished 11th in the Great American XC Festival in October.

Meet Projection – Peaking for the right moment describes this team perfectly. Cardinal Gibbons have come on strong securing a spot on the starting line in Portland. Sloan Walter has been a constant up front in the last two races for her team. She could be among the top 30 team placers in this race. Their top five spread has been near 50 seconds towards the end of the year. Cutting it by 10 seconds improves their chances in moving into the top 15.

Notes – Finished second in the Southeast Regional to qualify for NXN. The Rams were the Kentucky 3A State Champion. DuPont Manual finished second at Saturday Night Lights behind host Centerville OH and third at the Great American Festival behind meet winner Blacksburg.

Meet Projection – This team was a surprise in making it to Portland but is running strong at the right time. Alena Sapienza-Wright and Kathleen Sims have been the top runners for the team most of the season. Only 13 seconds separated the two in last week’s race. Sapienza-Wright has a good chance to finish in the top 20 team places. The gap between the two runners and the rest of the pack in the regional race was 64 seconds. A gap like that on Saturday could hurt this team.

Notes – The Blue Streaks did not have their best race of the year in finishing third in the New York Regional. That effort did earn them an at-large bid from the selection committee. Their best race of the year was the week before in winning the New York Federation Championships. Saratoga Springs finished third behind Shenendehowa Central and Niskayuna in the Section 2 Championships. They also finished ninth at the Great American XC Festival. The Blue Streaks did open the season by winning the Ocean State Invitational.

Meet Projection – One of the reasons why Saratoga Springs finished third last week was because top runner Kelsey Chmiel ran under the weather finishing 12th overall. Expect her to be close to 100 percent and running with the lead, chase, pack. Even with Chmiel near the front, it could be tough for this team to get into the top 15. Their spread from second-runner Carley Vetter to their fifth runner was only 26 seconds in their Feds race. It was 49 seconds last week. Closing that gap will be something to watch from this team.

Notes – The top team in the Northeast throughout the season. It won the Group 4 Championships and the New Jersey Meet of Champions race. It earned a second straight trip to Portland by winning the Northeast Regional.

Meet Projection – The Lions could move into the top 16 in this meet. The top-five spread could hurt them. Chloe Gonzalez has been the team’s top runner at the end of the year. She could be among the top 25 team runners. A strong run by Emily Nugent could net her a top 50 team place. Their spread on five has averaged 110 seconds in their past two weeks. Getting it under 80 seconds moves this team up.

Notes – A surprise making it to NXN. After finishing fifth in the New Jersey Group 4 Finals, the Dragons bounced back finishing second in both the New Jersey Meet of Champions and the Northeast Regional. Kingsway finished seventh in October in the Eastern States Race at the Manhattan Invitational.

Meet Projection – This could be a team to keep an eye on in 2018. Five of their top seven runners are underclassmen with three of their runners’ freshmen. This should be a valuable experience for this young team. Alexis Mullarkey has been the team’s top runner all season and is a possibility to finish among the top 50 team runners. The top-five spread in the past two races has been 65 and 66 seconds.
